Minneapolis Military Base - The site was the starting point for thousands of Minnesota soldiers during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. From 1944 to 1946, it was a Japanese language school for all American soldiers.
In 1915, the Twin Cities Auto Club built a 2.5-mile speedway where the Minneapolis-St. Polo International Airport (MSP) is now located. The autodrome was unsuccessful and closed. The next year, in 1920, the Aero Club of Minneapolis leased the land.

The dirt area in the center of the track became an airstrip, and the field's first hangar was created to house US airmail. Fort Snelling is a cornerstone of our region's and nation's history. It is home to many people, places and stories, including a historic fort, a state park, a Boy Scout base camp, a national cemetery, the Sibley House and more.
Consisting of 26 separate buildings, the community will include 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom apartments. Upper Post Flats will include a swimming pool, club house, business center, fitness center, playground and more. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2019.
Canoe, fish, swim in Snelling Lake, or hike to Pike Island, where the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers meet. Interpretive exhibits at the Thomas Savage Visitor Center provide a good introduction to the parkland's history and resources.

The station is a combat-ready flying unit of the Air Force Reserve Command's Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Air Reserve Station, Minnesota. The 934th Airlift Wing is a Department of Defense unit on reserve station. They are sometimes called the "Flying Vikings" and are the sole reserve unit of the Minnesota Air Force.

Together, these direct descendants of patriots of the American Revolution honor their heritage while making a difference by focusing on historic preservation, education, and supporting elder patriotism. The Fort's bicentennial in 2020 provides an additional opportunity to showcase Fort Snelling's historic sites, promote special bicentennial events, and bring its people and stories together in one place to honor 200 years of history.
The spring continued to supply water to the new fort and the later Upper Post. Initially, until the 1870s, the fort relied on horse-drawn water wagons and later railroad cars to deliver water from Cold Spring.
In 1923, the field was named Twin Cities Airport - Wold Chamberlain Field in honor of Ernest Wold and Cyrus Chamberlain, two Minnesota airmen killed in action in France during World War I. In 1926, Northwest Airways (now Northwest Airlines) won a government contract for air mail and purchased the field's only hangar.
By 1928, the field had grown to 325 acres and eight hangars, and then came under the management of the Minneapolis Park Board. The field was renamed Minneapolis Municipal Airport. Its main terminal, the former home of the Parks Board, housed two employees and a small Northwest staff.

In the mid-1930s, members of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Spanish American Veterans of War, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, the Jewish Veterans of War, and the American Legion attempted to establish a national military cemetery at the fort.
Snelling. Congress approved the plan in 1936 and 1937. The VA at Fort Snelling offers many services to support and treat veterans experiencing mental health and addiction issues. We strive to provide cutting-edge, evidence-based services and to partner closely with the University of Minnesota to facilitate research and education.

During the construction of Fort Snelling, American soldiers camped at Coldwater Spring, making it the first American settlement in Minnesota. By 1825, the construction of the fort was completed and soldiers moved from Coldwater to the fort.
In 1929, Northwest began passenger service to MSP with a 12-passenger Ford trimotor airplane. The runways were turf, but a concrete taxiway area was installed in front of the hangars and terminal building. The process of rolling and compacting snow in winter to mark runways has been so successful that requests for details of the process have come from as far away as the United States and even Alaska.

Aeromedical evacuation of patients within the theater of operations is another aspect of the mission. The 934th Airlift Wing supports the Air Force mission on a daily basis by providing airlift within the United States and around the world.
Wing members train in accordance with Air Force regulations and are vetted by active duty members of the Air Force. Under the mobilization order, the 934th Airlift Wing will deploy as part of the Air Force's Air Mobility Command.

DAR has more than 185,000 members in nearly 3,000 chapters nationwide and in many foreign countries. DAR members promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism through commemorative programs, scholarship and educational initiatives, civic programs, veterans services, and meaningful community service.
